Woomera

Imagine walking down the main street of a town and not seeing anybody, no cars, no people. The houses are well kept and gardens are maintained, but there is none of the usual "stuff" associated with life... cars in driveways, kids toys, pot plants and the odd bit of rubbish. It is a very eery feeling. Imagine walking up to the supermarket in the middle of the afternoon, where there is music playing from speakers out the front and the air conditioning unit over the door is running, but the shop is closed. There is still no sign of life. There is the odd car in a driveway down a side street or two and you see one or two people walking along another side street and they seem to disappear very quickly, but that is it. The place feels completely deserted, cared for, but totally empty. Now imagine that place has a 1950s vibe. That was my experience of downtown Woomera. I felt like we were walking through a movie set, like The Truman Show, or in a post apocalyptic film. Having said that, I actually really liked it.

There is a very cool park showcasing a variety of rockets, with quite a bit of history included. Rory was in his element. I touched a bit of rocket that had been up in the outer atmosphere or something.... something higher than just where aeroplanes fly. This was pretty cool! There are 2 museums full of the history of Woomera but we decided not to visit as it would have been too much for the kids, so we took them to a playground instead. (Hard choice... learning and education, and a headache for the adults, in a museum or fun for the kids and peace for the adults at a playground).

The caravan park was nice. It is a big, open gravel space but you get power and water and the amenities are clean. It was empty when we arrived around midday but got pretty busy in the late afternoon showing us just how many people are travelling up the middle of Aus at this time of year. There is a pub onsite, operating out of a shipping container. It has a pretty cool vibe and was selling cans of coke for $2 (important stuff when other places want to charge $3.50+).
